THE CHALLENGE: Too many kids end up in a Children's Hospital without the emotional and financial support they need from other kids. 12 year old Elliot Mast has figured out a way to "pitch in" and hit a home-run for Children's hospitals by swinging for a cause and raising a lot of money.
THE ACTIVITY: In the United States, about 30 million children and teens participate in some form of organized sports, imagine how much money kids could fundraise just by getting people to pledge donations for every home run, strike out and base hit.
THE OUTCOME: Raise money for a Children's Hospital.

Children’s Hospitals care for thousands and thousands of kids every year. Not only do they provide family-centered care, they also help physician-scientists advance innovation, so that they can find new cures to childhood diseases.
Because of privacy concerns however, many hospitals can not easily accommodate visitors who are not part of a patient’s circle of friends and family.
Still, there are a number of ways you can become an ambassador to sick kids -- and Elliot Mast’s way is to “Pitch In” by combining his love for baseball with fundraising.
ACTION TO DO: WATCH Elliot’s video.
Your city may have one or more Children’s Hospitals. With a quick Google search, you should be able to find the different websites in order to evaluate which Hospital are a match for you.
ACTION TO DO: READ the mission statement on 1 or more Children’s Hospital websites. Read about the different departments to decide where your funds can do the most good.
Elliot Mast asks members of his community, family and friends to pledge $10- dollars for each home-run, $5-dollars for every strike out, and $2-dollars for each base hit he achieves. As a result of his dedication to the game, he has raised thousands of dollars for the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh whose Foundation, Give to Children and Child Life Programs, aids ill kids and their families by making a child’s stay in the hospital fun and, according to Elliot, “not too scary.” In the doctor-free zone, Child Life provides games, toys, video games, books and hosts events so the “kids can be kids and not just patients.”
